Chapter 7

"What is wrong with me tonight?" Jessica muttered after she'd dropped her lipstick on the floor for the second time. Josh was due to arrive in a few minutes, and although Jessica believed in keeping a guy waiting, she did want to leave for the dance eventually.

She took in a deep breath and let it out slowly. Now relax and get a grip! She uncapped her mascara and leaned closer to her mirror. But as she brushed a coat onto her upper lashes her hand trembled, and she smeared a thick brown streak across her cheek.

She groaned with frustration and went into the bathroom to clean up the mess. The door to her twin's bedroom was open, and Jessica could hear her typing at the computer. Elizabeth had decided to skip the dance and spend the evening working on an article for the special year-end issue of the Oracle.

"I can't believe what a klutz I am!" Jessica declared. She dabbed at the mascara streak on her face with a wet washcloth, taking care not to ruin the rest of her makeup. "Liz, did you finish ironing my green jacket?"

Elizabeth came over and stood in the doorway. "I hung it up in your closet, master," she replied. Her eyes narrowed in a big-sister concerned look. ''What's bothering you, Jess? It's obvious something's up."

Jessica pressed her lips together. She considered telling Elizabeth the truth. Either I'm going nuts, or I've been seeing Christian Gorman all day, Jessica answered in her mind. If I told her that, she'd totally freak out worrying about me. Elizabeth often acted as if it were her life's mission to keep Jessica safe. And while Jessica had often relied on her older twin to bail her out of trouble, Elizabeth in her bodyguard–baby–sitter mode could also be a major pain in the neck.

Anyway, I'm probably just having some major psychological reaction because I've spent the day in his school, Jessica reasoned. And I don't have time to be depressed and sad tonight. She wanted to concentrate her energy on having a great time with Josh—and beating the stuffing out of Erica Dixon's team at the competition tomorrow.

"Jess, what is it?" Elizabeth pressed, visibly worried. "Are you upset because I brought in Christian's surfboard to use as a prop?"

"No, of course not," Jessica replied. "I think it was a brilliant idea. I'm just all excited about the talent show."

Elizabeth eyed her suspiciously. "You're not planning anything . . . evil, are you?"

Jessica put on a look of wounded innocence. "Just because I'm playing the evil twin, that doesn't mean I am the evil twin. I would never start trouble with Erica. Even though she deserves it." She giggled. "Although if that witch makes one wrong move tonight, she will get it all back tenfold—Jessica Wakefield style."

"That's what I'm afraid of," Elizabeth said. "Jess, be rational. The whole point of this weekend is to bring the schools closer together in spirit."

"The point of competition is to win," Jessica countered.

Elizabeth exhaled noisily.
